The Classroom Management and Instructional Strategies (CM&IS) program in 2006 will support a ‘whole school’ approach to improving student behaviour through its professional learning programs. Teachers participating in the 2006 program will be chosen by a District decision making group after applying through the Expression of Interest form.

Teachers will attend 5 one-day workshops (in Terms 1& 2) at a central location and will participate in conferencing in their own school. The Teacher Consultant will observe, and in a structured conference, give non-evaluative feedback to the teacher on skills presented at the previous workshop. There will be one observation/conference for each teacher following each workshop and the teacher needs approximately 20 minutes out of the classroom to facilitate this process.

The first opportunity for schools to participate in 2006 begins in Term 1. The District program will begin in week 4. Schools will be notified of the date and venue early in Term 1 2006.

2006 Direction

The CM&IS program is to be set within a broader context of whole school improvement rather than a stand alone professional development program.  Teachers will only be able to access the CM&IS training if it is part of their school’s overall approach to improving student behaviour.

Who should apply?

Teaching staff are encouraged to apply. The CMIS program should not be used as a strategy to manage poor performing teachers.

Schools need to commit to at least two teachers attending the program. Schools may choose to nominate a greater number of participants.

In the event of over-subscription of the program, Behaviour Management & Discipline schools will be given first preference to attend the program.

Cost to schools

Financial commitment from schools includes:

  • Teacher relief costs for their participating staff to attend the 5 whole-day sessions
  • Teacher relief to facilitate the conferencing

It is recommended that an administrator from the school attends the program with the participating teachers for the first series of workshops. Behaviour Management and Discipline (BM&D) Schools may use their funding to support their participation in the program.

How do schools apply?

Schools must complete an expression of interest form that identifies at least two teachers who will work together and include endorsement from the school Principal.  Schools with a Teacher Consultant(s) already based at their school are eligible to apply for this program in 2006.

The Expression of Interest form asks for positions, not teachers to be nominated by the school.

Given the limited places available the district decision making group will also consider the following in their final selection:

  • Balance across the phases of schooling and types of schools; and
  • Coverage across district cells.
  • In the event of over–subscription, Behaviour Management and Discipline Schools will be given priority
