Classroom Management and Instructional Strategies (CM&IS) is a professional learning program that supports teachers and school administrators in developing effective classroom management strategies that provide students with positive ands supportive learning environments.
The Classroom Management and Instructional Strategies (CM&IS) program reflects what is currently known about successful professional development programs and long term educational change. The program recognizes that to increase the probability of transfer from a workshop setting to classroom use, the following conditions need to exist:
- Change is not mandated
- The in-service program is not in addition to participants workload
- Information and training should not be presented in “one-shot” in-services. The knowledge and skills should accumulate over time
- A training process should be developed to bridge the gap between thinking and doing. The program must have practical impact and teachers should experience success.
A network of support
It is also understood that teams of teachers need to attend the professional development opportunities instead of individually. Teachers working in isolation can seldom implement sustained classroom change. It is the synergy, mutual support, and accountability of a group of teachers working in consort which is more likely to lead to successful implementation.
Successful implementation of effective classroom management strategies and initiatives is also dependent upon school leadership. The further away the school principal is from the initiative the less likely it is to be implemented. This is especially pertinent to instructional growth.
