The Classroom Management and Instructional Strategies (CM&IS) program is a “hands on” practical professional learning program emphasising instructional improvement.
Classroom Management and Instructional Strategies (CM&IS) program
Participants in the 5 day program will cover the following:
- Rationale for CM&IS program
A research based belief system for implementing change and growth in classroom practice
- Low key responses
A set of preventative and responsive teacher behaviours that reduce the likelihood of student misbehaviour occurring in the first instance or reduce the likelihood of student misbehaviour escalating into power and defiance. - Squaring Off
A teaching skill used to respond to students who continue to misbehave after the low key responses have not prevented escalation - Choices
A teaching skill used to allow students to make decisions about their behaviour - Diffusing the power struggle
Developing an understanding of the complex dynamic of the power struggle, and a sequence of teacher behaviours that focus on reducing the impact of students that escalate into power, defiance and revenge - Lesson Design – Set
A concept that facilitates the creative process of designing lessons - Instructional Skills- Accountability and Safe Classroom
Teacher behaviours that increase the likelihood of student engagement and student achievement
Examples of classroom management skills
The CM&IS program explicitly brings to a conscious level a wide range of instructional skills. The following are examples of some of the low key responses taught.
- “Come on Back” - what the teacher says or does to bring the student back into the classroom in a positive way, after their misbehaviour
- “Come on Back” is used to acknowledge the student and invite him back as a positive and active classroom participant.
- Preventative proximity - general movement around the classroom or to specific areas where misbehaviour is likely to occur
- Preventative proximity is employed to reduce the potential for behaviour problems
- Responding proximity - movement toward specific misbehaviour
- Responding proximity is employed because it communicates to the student that we are aware that something is going on
