Dr Shelley Billig is a researcher who has directed over 45 studies on service and service learning, including large national studies in the US and several international studies and projects documenting academic, civic, and social-emotional (character) outcomes for students and impact on schools and communities. She has also published 11 books and many articles examining community service and service-learning, with an emphasis on impact, quality, and relationship to educational improvement.

COMMUNITY SERVICE/SERVICE-LEARNING IN THE US: WHAT CAN WE LEARN
Dr Billig gave an overview of developments in community service/service-learning in the United States and presented evidence of the impact of these programs in a range of contexts, including where programs are compulsory. The finding of several new studies were presented that demonstrate a positive impact of mandatory service, along with other research and quality indicators.
