Leave Passes
To support schools in addressing issues surrounding attendance, the Department of Education and Training has a number of strategies and approaches in place. Standardised leave passes for unsupervised student absence from school were introduced in June 2004.
The use of standardised leave passes monitors unsupervised students who are absent from school. They distinguish between authorised and unauthorised absences.
Leave passes provide an opportunity for students participating in excursions who are not under the direct supervision of a teacher to demonstrate they have appropriate permission to be participating in an educational activity away from the school.
Leave passes provide ongoing opportunities for schools to work with their local community, district attendance officers and school-based attendance staff in managing non-attendance. The leave pass design assists Department of Education and Training personnel, police officers and local business people to identify students and verify that their absence from school is appropriate.
Guidelines for Standardised Leave Passes for Unsupervised Student Absence from School assists schools to effectively implement the standardised leave pass for student absence from school and includes the required form for schools to order leave passes.
